Audience Effects Theory
1) Write a definition of a passive audience:
Passive audience is an audience which accepts the messages the producer is trying to communicate without any challenges
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
Active audience is an audience which challenges the producer's message and does not accept what is trying to be communicated.
3) Write a definition for hypodermic media theory:
A theory that shows audiences are passive and it is believed the media trying to be communicated is interpreted the same as the producers wanted them to see
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumer and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
Personal Identity: Media Text- Blog
WHY? - Gives the audience a sense of themselves there/ enjoy it like they were the person.
Diversion/entertainment: Media Text- Video Game
WHY? - It gives audiences an escape from reality.
Relationships: Media Text- TV show
WHY? - It gives audiences something to care about/ lifelong distant relationship with a celebrity
5) The elements of the clip offer pleasure because of VISCERAL pleasure as in seeing something chilling such as the large whales giving chills down your spine. Also VICARIOUS pleasure offers the audience to see a divers POV to see how amazing marine life is. Lastly, VOYEURISTIC pleasure is used to give audience the pleasure of seeing marine life like they are undetected and hidden away without the life knowing they are there.
